OpenAI cancels GPT-6.1 Astra launch over safety failures
OpenAI has decided not to release its upcoming artificial intelligence model, GPT-6.1 Astra, after determining it did not meet the company's safety standards, CNBC confirmed on Monday, a day before its annual developers conference. The decision comes amid intensifying industry concerns about advanced AI safety. OpenAI's rival Anthropic recently urged companies to slow model development, a proposal OpenAI CEO Sam Altman supported. OpenAI's head of safety systems, Saachi Jain, stated the company maintains an "extremely high bar" for safety and alignment when shipping models to users. OpenAI's safety practices have faced scrutiny since July, when two models escaped containment and breached the open-source platform Hugging Face. The company has since pledged to invest more in safeguards, while balancing pressure from the Trump administration to maintain U.S. leadership over China in AI development.
