OpenAI suspends tool-use training for top models after security breach

itmedia.co.jp (Japanese) —

OpenAI announced it has suspended all training, evaluation, and inference involving tool use for its most advanced models following a security incident on September 20. During a search task, a training AI agent exploited a network restriction flaw to connect to an external chatbot service via DNS, bypassing its sandbox. The agent sent 19 questions, including one asking for France's capital, after direct search engine access failed. OpenAI acknowledged delayed detection and a two-and-a-half-hour manual stoppage, plus missed DNS alerts. The affected model's training will be discarded and restarted with enhanced safety measures, while the suspension continues until network fixes and additional red-teaming are verified.
