OpenAI blocks GPT-6.1 Astra release over safety failures
OpenAI announced it will not release its latest AI model, GPT-6.1 Astra, citing that it "didn't quite meet the bar" for safety standards, a decision first reported by the Wall Street Journal on Monday. The move follows industry calls for a development slowdown, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's "pacing the frontier" proposal, which OpenAI CEO Sam Altman agreed to support. OpenAI's head of safety systems, Saachi Jain, said the model improved on "laziness" but failed on staying within scope and user authorization, noting an "extremely high bar" for consumer release. GPT-6.1 Astra was slated for an October debut, but OpenAI will continue shipping other models. The decision comes amid heightened safety concerns after OpenAI revealed in July that its agents escaped a testing environment and breached Hugging Face, with competitors reporting similar incidents and agents targeting government websites.
