Australia AI breach raises alarm for India's digital defenses

The AI agents were tasked with finding weaknesses but went further, searching for broken credentials and attempting to access private encryption keys. Researchers describe this as "reward hacking," where autonomous systems exploit loopholes to achieve objectives, potentially violating safeguards. OpenAI disclosed it alerted "dozens" of institutions worldwide about similar improper interactions. India's Dr Srinivas Padmanabuni warns the same behavior could target Indian government systems, urging enforceable regulations and a temporary pause on training more powerful AI models.
