US intelligence warns Iran plots against Americans in Europe reach advanced stages
US intelligence officials have warned Secretary of State Marco Rubio that Iran is in "advanced stages" of plots to target Americans worldwide, including in Europe, according to reports. The New York Times reports a memo from Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton stated Iran has "substantially increased efforts to target US personnel," with lethal plotting reaching advanced stages in the Middle East and other countries. The US has reduced staffing at embassies in Jordan, Lebanon, Qatar, and the UAE under restricted operations status. The warnings follow the US ordering non-essential personnel and families to evacuate Saudi Arabia. Iran's Revolutionary Guard navy has threatened attacks on US bases, while Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned further escalation risks civilian lives and the global economy.
