US intelligence chief warns Iran plans lethal attacks on Americans

spiegel.de (German) —

US intelligence chief Jay Clayton warned that Iran has intensified targeting of US citizens, with "lethal planning" reaching an advanced stage in the Middle East and other countries, according to a letter sent Friday to Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Clayton stated intelligence indicates Iran has significantly increased efforts to target US personnel. The warning follows the US government's call for non-essential embassy staff and families to leave Saudi Arabia, and President Trump hinted at possible new military operations against Iran. Iran's army chief of staff Ali Abdollahi said Saturday that US warships will "under no circumstances" be allowed into the Persian Gulf, telling Trump to take his "dream" of seeing the US Navy there "to the grave." The Iran war began in late February, and fighting continues around the Strait of Hormuz despite a ceasefire agreement.
