Iran threatens Gulf internet cables as Trump hints at new strikes on Tehran
President Donald Trump has raised the possibility of another US military operation against Iran, while Tehran threatens undersea internet cables in the Gulf if Washington and Israel resume attacks. Experts warn that renewed strikes could deepen regional instability without delivering a decisive end to the war. Speaking at a Florida rally on Friday, Trump referenced the US operation that began February 28 and said oil continues moving through the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian security officials told Reuters they could target seven major cables beneath the strait, potentially delaying repairs to prolong communications disruptions. Undersea cables carry about 99 percent of global internet traffic, though less than 1 percent of international bandwidth passes through the Strait of Hormuz, according to TeleGeography. Gulf states have invested heavily in digital infrastructure, with Iranian strikes previously damaging Amazon Web Services facilities in the UAE and Bahrain.
