Wüst breaks CDU taboo on AfD ban review

German state premier Hendrik Wüst has broken a taboo within his CDU party by publicly calling for a federal-state working group to examine a potential ban on the far-right AfD party. He stated this marks the first time a CDU figure has made such a demand publicly. Wüst emphasized the review must be open-ended, involving constitutional protection officials, legal experts, and specialists from federal and state levels. He stressed that if the examination concludes the AfD can be banned, initiating the procedure becomes a binding obligation to protect the constitution. However, Wüst warned against rushed action, saying a ban should only be the last resort. He cautioned that a poorly prepared case failing in court could backfire, allowing the AfD to return from Karlsruhe with a label declaring it constitutionally sound.
