Trump did not explicitly name the party but the reference was clear, attributing its success to Germans being tired of "very terrible immigration rules." Since taking office in January 2025, the party has developed closer ties with Washington, with co-leader Alice Weidel calling Trump a role model. Trump's second term has featured a hardline approach to migrants, including mass deportations, and he has repeatedly criticized Germany's asylum and immigration policies.
