Trump Praises AfD Win in Saxony-Anhalt, Slams German Immigration
US President Donald Trump praised the far-right AfD's election victory in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, using the slogan "Make Germany Great Again" and criticizing Germany's immigration policies. He posted on Truth Social that the "populist party" had a "really big evening." The AfD, classified as extremist by state authorities, won nearly 44 percent of the vote on Sunday, more than doubling its 2021 share, while the ruling CDU fell to 17.2 percent. Trump claimed Germans are "fed up" with "terrible" immigration rules and are "on the rise." Trump's allies, including Elon Musk and former ambassador Richard Grenell, also celebrated the result. The victory could make the AfD the first far-right party to lead a German state government since 1945, though it lacks an absolute majority.
