AfD wins over non-voters in Saxony-Anhalt state election

The far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) won a landslide victory in the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt, doubling its vote share compared to five years ago, with most of its new support coming from previous non-voters. Turnout surged to 77.8 percent, the highest since 1990, up from 60.3 percent in 2021. Nearly two-thirds of those who abstained last time voted for the AfD, according to a poll of over 20,000 voters by infratest dimap. The AfD's success reflects its ability to mobilize disaffected citizens through polarization and promises of simple solutions. The party drew support across demographics, though it remains weakest among the over-70s, who show greater historical awareness and stronger party loyalty.
