Iran plans to strike Gulf undersea cables if US and Israel attack
Iran has prepared detailed plans to target undersea communication cables in the Gulf if the US and Israel launch a new attack, according to two senior Iranian security officials. The officials warned there would be no more "red lines" in such a scenario. The officials, speaking anonymously to Reuters, said Iran would aim to disrupt internet connections and hinder repair efforts to prolong outages. One official warned Washington against "playing with fire," claiming Iran has full access to the cables. A Revolutionary Guard deputy stated Iran could target seven major internet cables under the Strait of Hormuz. Undersea cables carry about 99% of global internet traffic, though less than 1% of international bandwidth passes through the Strait of Hormuz, limiting potential global impact. Gulf states are investing heavily in technology infrastructure, and Iran has previously targeted facilities linked to US companies like Amazon Web Services.
