Iran plans strikes on Gulf undersea internet cables if attacked
Iran has developed detailed plans to attack undersea internet cables in the Gulf if the US and Israel strike again, two senior Iranian security officials told Reuters, threatening regional network disruptions. The officials, speaking anonymously, said Iran would aim to prevent repairs to prolong outages, with one warning "there will be no more red lines" from cables to military bases. Revolutionary Guards official Yadollah Javani cited seven major cables under the Strait of Hormuz as potential targets. Undersea cables carry 99% of global internet traffic, but less than 1% of international bandwidth passes through the Strait, limiting global impact. Analysts say threats aim to pressure Gulf states and US firms, while the Red Sea could be a more significant target.
