150,000 Germans protest far-right AfD's electoral win in 20 cities

Around 150,000 people demonstrated in about twenty German cities on Saturday, according to organizers, following the far-right AfD party's electoral victory. Protesters carried signs reading "Ban the AfD now" and "Democracy needs no alternatives." Campact campaign group director Christoph Bautz said a broad section of civil society took to the streets to prevent the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt from gaining power. The demonstrations reflect public concern over the party's rise, with many citing Germany's Nazi past and calling for a ban, though opinions on such a procedure remain divided. In Berlin, thousands protested while the AfD held a counter-rally featuring its top candidate Kristin Brinker ahead of the September 20 municipal election. Campact reported 25,000 demonstrators in Hamburg and 12,000 in Munich.
