Plague lab researcher in Siberia dies of unknown infection
A 28-year-old female laboratory technician at Russia's Irkutsk Research Anti-Plague Institute died from pneumonia of unknown origin, prompting quarantine measures and isolation of dozens of contacts. Russian officials downplayed links to her work, saying no pathogens tied to her duties were found. The researcher worked in Shelekhov, near the Mongolian border, at a facility monitoring high-risk infections across Siberia. Regional authorities implemented anti-epidemic measures, including hospital quarantine and testing of recent contacts, while unofficial reports suggest nearly 200 people are under observation. Pneumonic plague, caused by Yersinia pestis, is deadly but not easily transmitted, unlike respiratory illnesses such as COVID. The U.S. State Department is monitoring the situation, and the World Health Organization notes the disease is treatable with antibiotics.
