Siberia Virus Leak Prompts Border Closures in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan
A deadly virus leak from a Russian laboratory has prompted neighboring countries to prepare to seal their borders. The incident occurred in Siberia, where a researcher died after dropping a vial containing a lethal plague virus. The 28-year-old female researcher was infected on October 1 and died hours later from severe pneumonia. Following her exposure, 197 contacts were tested and cleared, but Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan have intensified border surveillance and may impose a full border closure within two days. Experts say the virus is unlikely to spread rapidly internationally because it incapacitates victims quickly, and effective treatments exist. The concern reflects fears of another pandemic similar to COVID-19.
