rbc.ua (Russian) —

The White House is monitoring reports of a suspected plague case and related quarantine measures in Russia's Irkutsk region. A 28-year-old researcher, Daria Shipilova, reportedly broke a vial containing pneumonic plague on September 25, was hospitalized with severe pneumonia on September 29, and died on October 2. Authorities quarantined medical facilities and placed about 200 contacts under observation, though tests have been negative. Russian health officials have not confirmed plague as the cause of death, citing "pneumonia of unknown etiology" and finding no microorganisms in further tests. Governor Igor Kobzev stated no contacts show signs of illness.
