France Bans Oct 24 Rallies in Marmande and Villeneuve-sur-Lot; Agen March Allowed
A prefectural decree issued Friday, October 23, 2026, bans all gatherings in the city centers of Marmande and Villeneuve-sur-Lot for Saturday, October 24, citing fears of major unrest. Only a CGT-declared demonstration in Agen will be permitted, under strict supervision. The ban follows a peaceful, undeclared rally in Marmande on October 17, which authorities say shows groups can form outside legal channels. In contrast, a spontaneous gathering in Agen that day led to attempted intrusions onto railway tracks, and two women were later convicted for violence against police. The prefect justified the measure by citing risks to public safety and recent severe incidents in Bordeaux, Toulouse, and Paris. The prohibition covers central areas, including train stations, from noon Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday, though demonstrations are still allowed in other permitted sectors.
