Democrats' State-Level Wins Reshape Local Power Across US
Democrats won numerous state-level races in Tuesday's US midterm elections, including governorships, sheriffs, and judicial seats, expanding their influence beyond Congress. These victories give the party significant power over state budgets, legislation, and local policy. In Texas, Nevada, Iowa, Ohio, and Georgia, Democrats flipped the governor's office from Republican control. New Democratic governors in Georgia and Ohio plan to restrict data center development, while Texas's first Latina governor, Gina Hinojosa, promised a moratorium on such projects. Democrats also won local sheriff races, notably in a Maryland district where the new sheriff will end cooperation with immigration enforcement. Democrats secured seats in Texas's Supreme Court for the first time since 1994, potentially impacting abortion rulings. The incoming Democratic attorney general replaces Trump-loyalist Ken Paxton, who unsuccessfully challenged the 2020 election results. Additionally, Democrats gained four seats on Texas's education board, which oversees school curriculum and book bans.
