Democrats gain 18% in Congress after midterm wins
The Democratic Party secured majorities in both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives in the midterm elections, defeating President Donald Trump's Republican Party. Democratic representation in both chambers grew by approximately 18% compared to the previous composition. Democrats won at least 54 of 100 Senate seats, with Republicans holding 44, while races in Alaska and Mississippi remained undecided. In the House, Democrats increased from 214 to 253 seats, while Republicans fell from 218 to 160, with 22 races still unresolved. Democrats achieved victories in traditionally Republican states including Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, South Carolina, and Texas, where James Talarico became the first Democratic senator elected since 1988. Trump said he would accept the results, though he posted a "veto" image on Truth Social, while the White House responded with "Trump is still your president."
