The U.S. national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline is $4.47 as of Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2026, according to AAA, with prices remaining well above $4.40 amid rising crude oil costs. The ongoing war with Iran is driving up crude oil prices, with gasoline costs rising roughly 7% to 8% over the last month. Diesel prices have jumped 14% in the same period, reaching $6.53 per gallon. Gas prices set a record last month, marking the first time the average stayed above $4 for an entire month. GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan warned diesel prices may climb for a few more days before decreasing.
