U.S. average gas price holds at $4.47 per gallon

The national average price for regular unleaded gasoline in the U.S. is $4.47 per gallon as of Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2026, according to AAA, with prices remaining well above $4.40 amid rising crude oil costs. Fuel prices have risen roughly 7% to 8% over the last month for gasoline, while diesel has jumped 14% to $6.53 per gallon. The increases are driven by the ongoing war with Iran, which continues to push up crude oil prices. Last month set a record with the average staying above $4 for an entire month for the first time, and September is trending as the most expensive on record. GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan warned diesel prices may climb for a few more days before decreasing.
