Minnesota diesel hits record $6.35 per gallon; gas up $1.35 from last year

Diesel prices in Minnesota reached a record high of $6.35 per gallon on Tuesday, according to AAA data, surpassing all previous state averages. Regular gasoline also rose sharply, now costing $1.35 more per gallon than a year ago. The statewide average for regular unleaded was $4.38 on Tuesday, up 24 cents from a month ago, while mid-grade and premium averaged $4.82 and $5.35, respectively. The spike is driven largely by crude oil prices around $100 a barrel amid volatility in the Strait of Hormuz. Nationally, regular gas averaged $4.44 as of Sept. 17, approaching this year's peak of $4.56. California had the highest state average at $6.08, while Indiana had the lowest at $3.92. Minnesota ranked among the 10 cheapest states for public EV charging at 37 cents per kilowatt hour.
