EU Fuel Prices Hit Record Highs as Oil Costs Surge

European Union transport fuel prices have hit record highs, driven by surging crude oil costs linked to the Middle East war and Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries. This has created significant financial pressure on consumers and governments across the bloc. Crude oil has climbed from about $70 per barrel in late February to roughly $100 currently, while refined products like diesel face even greater pressure. Gulf nations, key exporters, have become financially unviable due to maritime freight costs rising around $50 per barrel, and Ukrainian drone attacks are reducing global diesel supply. Pump prices vary widely across Europe due to differing national taxes and subsidies, with taxes often making up over two-thirds of the price. In response, countries like Portugal and Romania have cut fuel taxes, while the European Commission has authorized state aid for affected industries.
