EU fuel prices jump 23.8% in a year, Greece sees 16% rise

Fuel prices for private transport rose by an average of 23.8% across the EU between August 2025 and August 2026, according to Eurostat data released today. Increases were recorded in 26 of the 27 member states. The largest annual increases were in Bulgaria (+34.5%), Lithuania (+28.8%), Finland (+27.6%), Germany (+27.5%), and France (+27.4%). The smallest were in Hungary (+1.3%), Sweden (+6.1%), Ireland (+11.7%), Estonia (+14%), and Greece (+16%). Diesel rose 8.3% and petrol 3.3% between July and August 2026. Monthly diesel increases were steepest in the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, and Luxembourg, while petrol rose most in Spain, Romania, Italy, and Cyprus. Hungary, Denmark, and Slovakia saw slight petrol decreases. Greece recorded a 1.9% monthly petrol increase.
