TSX slips from record high as National Bank shares fall
Canada's main stock index rose Wednesday as investors weighed National Bank of Canada's quarterly results and ongoing U.S. trade tensions, though the TSX fell 47.15 points to 36,910.48, retreating from Tuesday's record high. National Bank reported a third-quarter profit increase driven by strong wealth management performance, but its shares dropped 5.1% to $210.95. The results followed stronger-than-expected earnings from Bank of Montreal and Scotiabank, which helped the index reach its all-time high. Canada retaliated against U.S. tariffs with duties on $20 billion of annual imports. Gold slid 2.6%, while energy led gains. On Wall Street, the S&P 500 was flat as inflation data showed a 3.7% year-over-year increase.
