Le Pen's EU Overhaul Plan Risks Backfiring in Brussels
Marine Le Pen, leader of France's National Rally party, held a press conference in Brussels on Wednesday to outline her plans to reshape the European Union from within if she wins the French presidential election in May 2027, warning EU leaders against finalizing the bloc's next budget before she takes office. Le Pen, who now says "being for France does not mean being against Europe," wants to strip the EU of powers she considers outside its competence, including the Green Deal, EU enlargement, financial aid to Ukraine, and development assistance. She also demands France's net EU contribution be halved to a maximum of five billion euros annually. Her warning may backfire, as EU leaders are likely to accelerate budget negotiations for 2028-2034 to secure funding before a potential Le Pen presidency. German Chancellor Merz has already signaled extended negotiations, while Le Pen announced she will return to Brussels during this "important European election year."
