EU leaders seek 70 billion euros to cover Ukraine's 2027 war funding gap

hotnews.ro (Romanian) —

EU leaders asked the European Commission on Friday to propose covering Ukraine's additional 2027 funding needs, estimated by President Volodymyr Zelensky at 70 billion euros. Zelensky told the 27 leaders the war with Russia will cost 155 billion euros next year, requiring at least 70 billion euros in extra EU support for defense, arms, and resilience. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed an anticipated 70-billion-euro deficit for 2027, noting the existing 90-billion-euro EU loan covers 2026 needs. Von der Leyen urged other partners to contribute, as the EU and member states provide 80% of Ukraine's external aid. Council President Antonio Costa stressed continued support, saying Russia's actions appear to escalate rather than move toward peace.
