EU’s von der Leyen: Ukraine needs €70 billion in 2027, partners must help
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Ukraine faces a €70 billion funding shortfall for 2027 and called on partners to help cover it. She stated that one-third of the needed amount must be provided by international partners. Von der Leyen made the remarks Friday in Brussels after a two-day European Council meeting. She noted the EU and its member states currently provide 80% of Ukraine's external aid, adding that while the EU will maintain its leading role, other partners must step up. The EU has already allocated nearly €16 billion for Ukraine's defense under the Ukraine Support Loan mechanism, with up to €17 billion more possible by year-end. Von der Leyen stressed that Ukraine's financing needs will keep growing as the war continues.
