WHO warns DR Congo Ebola outbreak may peak in six months

The World Health Organization warns that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo may peak within six months and could surpass the 2014-2016 West Africa crisis as the deadliest in history. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the outbreak has already spread rapidly, with 2,000 deaths and 4,300 infections reported. Two vaccines for the Bundibugyo strain are being tested, but early cases were misdiagnosed as malaria or typhoid, accelerating transmission. The current outbreak is the second largest ever, spreading three times faster than the 2014-2016 epidemic, which killed 11,000 people. Most cases are in Ituri province, with the worst phase potentially still ahead.
