Congo Ebola Outbreak Spreads to Sixth Province as Bundibugyo Virus Complicates Response

The Democratic Republic of Congo's Ebola outbreak has spread to a sixth province, Bas-Uele, after a man who traveled from Haut-Uele, raising fears it could become the world's largest outbreak, according to health officials, with 4,566 cases and 2,128 deaths, with the virus spreading at an exceptionally rapid pace. The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, which has no approved vaccine or specific treatment, unlike previous outbreaks, with insecurity, conflict, and human movement, with the virus spreading across provinces and borders, including Uganda, and WHO declaring a Public Health Emergency of International Concern in May. Health authorities face major obstacles including armed conflict, displacement, poor infrastructure, and community mistrust, which hamper contact tracing and isolation efforts, while the virus had a head start before the official declaration on May 15, with WHO warning it could surpass the 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic.
