Ebola outbreak in DR Congo spreads to sixth province

The Democratic Republic of Congo's Ebola outbreak has spread to a sixth province after a death was recorded in Bas-Uele, Africa CDC director-general Jean Kaseya said. The man had travelled from Isiro in Haut-Uele province to Buta, where he died. The outbreak in eastern DR Congo is considered the fastest-growing yet and is on track to surpass the deadliest one in history, which killed over 11,000 people, the WHO said. It has killed over 2,100 people out of more than 4,500 cases, with no approved vaccines or treatments for the rare Bundibugyo virus responsible. The outbreak is unfolding in challenging conditions, including strikes by unpaid health workers, rebel threats, and misinformation. Health workers at the Nizi Treatment Centre in Ituri province went on strike Thursday over unpaid wages, leading to its temporary closure. The outbreak was declared May 15 but began months earlier in February.
