Ebola outbreak spreads to sixth province in DR Congo as clinical trial reaches 100 patients

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has spread to a sixth province, Bas-Uélé, and is on track to become the deadliest in the country's history, with 4,566 confirmed cases and at least 2,128 deaths reported. The announcement was made Thursday by Jean Kaseya, head of the Africa CDC. The province, bordering the Central African Republic, had previously been spared; one person arriving from Haut-Uélé died there. Separately, the international PARTNERS clinical trial for Ebola Bundibugyo has reached 100 participants, according to WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. No specific treatment for Ebola Bundibugyo has proven effective yet. The trial, conducted at a Médecins sans frontières-supported center in Bunia, randomly assigns patients to receive MBP134, remdesivir, both, or standard care. The 100-participant milestone marks progress, but no efficacy results have been announced.
