Uganda's Ebola defense strategy against DRC outbreak

Uganda faces a high risk of Ebola spillover from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where a deadly Bundibugyo outbreak has caused over 3,700 cases and 1,700 deaths, experts warn. Uganda, which declared its outbreak over on July 28, has contained the disease with a 10 percent fatality rate versus DRC's 44 percent. Officials urge heightened surveillance, community engagement, and cross-border collaboration to prevent importations, which comprised 75 percent of Uganda's cases. Experts say peace in DRC is essential for controlling the outbreak, as conflict hampers response efforts. Uganda has sent 58 specialists and established treatment centers in DRC to manage the epidemic at its source.
