Ebola outbreak in Congo reaches sixth province

Congo's Ebola outbreak has spread to a sixth province after a death was recorded in previously unaffected Bas-Uele province, Africa's CDC head said Thursday. The outbreak has killed over 2,100 people among more than 4,500 cases. The man died in Buta after traveling from Isiro in Haut-Uele province, said Jean Kaseya. He was a motorcycle-taxi driver whose colleagues forcibly tried to take his body, prompting police intervention and concerns about further exposure. The outbreak is considered the fastest-growing yet. The current outbreak is on track to surpass the deadliest in history, which killed over 11,000 people. No approved vaccines or treatments exist for the rare Bundibugyo virus responsible. Unpaid health worker strikes and low contact tracing are hampering response efforts.
