Trump spoke with Pakistan's army chief before his Tehran visit

US President Donald Trump spoke last week with Pakistan's army chief General Asim Munir ahead of his visit to Tehran, as Islamabad makes a new attempt to mediate between Washington and Iran, according to Reuters and AFP. Reuters cited three Pakistani sources, one of which said Washington's main demand was for Pakistan to use its influence to bring Iran back to the negotiating table. Two sources said Trump initiated the call, though details remain unknown. AFP separately confirmed the call via a US source. Munir arrived in Tehran on August 24 with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. Pakistan's military called the visit part of efforts to promote regional peace. Islamabad previously helped broker a framework agreement in June that later collapsed. The initiative comes amid US threats of sanctions against countries providing support to Iran.
