Trump names Stephen Miller chief of staff after midterm losses
President Donald Trump replaced White House chief of staff Susie Wiles with Stephen Miller on Friday, days after Republicans lost control of Congress in the midterm elections. Wiles will continue working for Trump's political organization. Wiles, the first woman to hold the chief of staff position and Trump's longest-serving in that role, praised her tenure in a social media statement, citing border security, tax cuts, and economic strength. Miller, a longtime adviser and architect of the administration's hard-line immigration policies, was promoted from deputy chief of staff. Wiles announced a breast cancer diagnosis in March 2026 but later indicated no evidence of the disease remained after treatment. Miller joined Trump's 2016 campaign as a speechwriter and previously worked for former Senator Jeff Sessions.
