False AI report nearly sparked US-China military clash

A false AI-generated intelligence report nearly triggered a military confrontation between the US and China, with American fighter jets already airborne before officials discovered the error. The chatbot mistakenly identified cargo on a Chinese vessel as components for a nuclear weapons program destined for the Middle East. US military planners developed interception and boarding plans for the ship following the report, which was produced by an analyst using an AI chatbot. The document, described as "completely false" by a source, was only scrutinized closely at the last moment, preventing a potential escalation into armed conflict between the two nations. CNN reported the incident on September 18, citing informed sources. The analyst had queried the chatbot about intelligence reports concerning the vessel's cargo manifest, which had recently arrived from US Special Operations Command in the Pacific region based in Hawaii. It remains unclear whether the chatbot was a commercial product or a US government development, and the Pentagon has not yet responded to requests for comment
