Kane dedicates Ballon d'Or to hospitalized Kompany after emotional call
Harry Kane received the Ballon d'Or in London on Tuesday, becoming the first Bayern Munich player to win the award since 1981. The 33-year-old striker was visibly overwhelmed, saying he was "almost speechless" at the ceremony. Kane revealed that his coach Vincent Kompany called him from a Munich hospital on the morning of the award, despite being hospitalized after collapsing during training last Friday. Kane dedicated the award to Kompany, praising him for developing him "as a player, person, and leader." Kane also thanked his Bayern teammates and the club's leadership, with sporting director Max Eberl calling him a "gain" for the club. Kompany, who was nominated for Coach of the Year, could not attend the gala.
