iFixit teardown reveals what kills the iPhone Duo's screen in hours
iFixit's teardown of Apple's first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, identified potential causes of screen failures reported by users, while still awarding it the highest repairability score ever given to a foldable device. The teardown revealed that the central support plate may fail to retract properly during folding, exerting excessive pressure on the display, and curved guides could rise and contact the screen if their movement is disrupted. These issues likely explain cracking sounds and bright lines appearing near the cable opening and central hinge support, a common failure zone. iFixit gave the iPhone Duo a preliminary repairability score of 5 out of 10, the best for any foldable phone. The device features a complex hinge with gears and springs, a nano-textured display with oval subpixels to hide the crease, and two batteries totaling 19.073 watt-hours.
