Ebola outbreak in Congo could become worst ever, WHO warns

The World Health Organization warns the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is on track to become the worst ever recorded. Over 2,000 people have died so far, with 4,300 confirmed cases. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says the current pace could surpass the 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic, which killed more than 11,000 people. The outbreak, which started in February, is the fastest-growing in history. Unlike most previous outbreaks, it involves the bundibugyo strain, for which no approved vaccines or treatments exist. Experts say the spread in the eastern part of the country is outpacing efforts to trace and manage it.
