UK vows to defend Falkland Islands sovereignty after Argentina's renewed claims

The UK will "stand firm" against threats to Falkland Islands sovereignty, Prime Minister Andy Burnham declared, following renewed territorial claims by Argentina's President Javier Milei. Burnham raised the issue directly with US President Donald Trump, an ally of Milei, during talks at the United Nations. He stated that Britain will defend the Falkland Islanders' right to self-determination and to remain British, adding that Trump "very much understood" the UK's position. Milei reasserted Argentina's claim in a national broadcast, saying the islands "are our future." His government also filed a criminal complaint against oil exploration entity Navitas Petroleum, escalating tensions over the disputed territory.
