The UK will review its agreement to transfer sovereignty over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius after US President Donald Trump called it a "terrible deal," Defence Secretary Wes Streeting confirmed on Wednesday. Streeting said the review is necessary because Washington does not support the agreement in its current form, and Britain must work with the US to find an acceptable arrangement. The proposed deal would transfer sovereignty to Mauritius while retaining access to the Diego Garcia military base through a 99-year lease, at an estimated cost of £3.4 billion. The agreement was signed in 2025 but paused in April after Trump withdrew support.
