UK to review Chagos Islands deal after Trump calls it 'terrible'

The United Kingdom will review its agreement with Mauritius to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands after US President Donald Trump again called the deal "terrible," intensifying pressure on the UK government. UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said the agreement must be re-examined because Washington opposes it, following Trump's remarks at the UN General Assembly. The deal, already paused since April, would transfer sovereignty while leasing the Diego Garcia military base to the UK for 99 years at about £101 million annually. Trump previously withdrew support, reversing an initial US welcome, and has reportedly considered buying the islands outright. Any changes require coordination among the UK, US, and Mauritius.
