Tesla starts Optimus robot production in Fremont, targeting 20,000 units weekly by 2027
Tesla has begun manufacturing its Optimus humanoid robots on production lines in Fremont, California, with CEO Elon Musk targeting 20,000 units per week by the end of 2027. The initial production run marks the first time Tesla has built Optimus to commercial standards, though Musk cautioned that output will ramp slowly due to the robot's novelty. The company disclosed the milestone in its third-quarter 2026 shareholder update, noting that reliability and software development remain significant hurdles before broad deployment. Tesla is expanding computing infrastructure to 400 megawatts by end of 2026 to support robot and vehicle development. The company also faces battery supply constraints, while third-quarter revenue was nearly flat at $28.04 billion and profit fell 43% amid increased investments.
