Sánchez urges EU to open up to Latin America at Madrid summit

sapo.pt (Portuguese) —

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called for a European Union "more open" to Latin America at the opening of the 30th Ibero-American Summit in Madrid, which runs until Thursday. Sánchez argued Europe must expand its alliances and that no other region shares as many values with the EU, including democracy, human rights, and sustainable development. He urged Latin American and Caribbean nations to forge a stronger alliance with Europe, citing the recent EU-Canada partnership as a model. The summit, attended by 22 countries, opened with a minute of silence for victims of last week's Spanish train crash that killed 69 people. Portugal is represented by President António José Seguro and Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, with former leaders António Costa and António Guterres attending as special guests.
