Brazilian investors back Piauí Governor Rafael Fonteles for Lula's Economy Ministry
Brazilian financial market investors have identified Piauí Governor Rafael Fonteles as their preferred candidate to lead the Economy Ministry in President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's new term starting in 2027, following market disappointment over recent election results. Fonteles, a mathematician with a master's degree from IMPA, is praised for his economic expertise and fiscal discipline, including a state rule limiting primary spending growth to 70%. He previously served as Piauí's Finance Secretary and privatized the state's sanitation company. Under his leadership, Piauí reduced extreme poverty by 66% between 2022 and 2024 and improved its high school education ranking from 21st to 2nd place nationally. If appointed, Vice Governor Washington Bandeira would assume the state government.
