Centrão leaders meet Motta to push electoral reform before new Congress
Centrão party leaders met Wednesday with Chamber President Hugo Motta to discuss changing Brazil's electoral system this year, aiming to counter the PL's congressional growth. The initiative is treated as a top priority before new deputies take office. The proposal seeks to reduce influence of high-vote candidates like Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) and strengthen center parties. Two models are under discussion: a mixed district system and "distritão," though consensus is lacking and the latter requires a constitutional amendment needing 308 votes. Senate President Davi Alcolumbre has authorized Motta to negotiate a consensus text. The PL won 121 federal deputies, while five Centrão parties together elected 207, down 19 from their current total.
