The matte coating reduces fold appearance, but a top protective layer can wear from repeated opening and closing. Bergeron stated the layer is engineered for durability and is user-replaceable, allowing customers to swap it for a new one. The iPhone Duo, launched last month, uses multi-layer materials unlike conventional phones to enable folding without breaking.
