US and India 'Pretty Close' to Trade Deal, Trump Says
US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the United States and India are "pretty close" to reaching a trade deal, describing it as "a much different kind of deal" than previous agreements. He made the remarks in response to a question at the Oval Office. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, visiting India, called the proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement "incredibly close," saying negotiations are down to resolving technical details. He met with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in Mumbai, and both sides reaffirmed commitment to an early conclusion of the pact. The deal follows a framework finalized in February, with further talks prompted by changes in US tariffs. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal met US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer earlier this month. Rubio's visit also covers defence, technology, and energy cooperation.
